Dams & Picnic Spots Near GSDR Nature's Cave: A Nayagarh Day-Out Guide

There's a particular kind of calm that only water gives — and the countryside around GSDR Nature's Cave is dotted with reservoirs and picnic spots made for slow afternoons. Here's where to spread a blanket, watch for deer, and catch a reflection-perfect sunset.

Panipoila Dam — 3.5 km

Our closest water escape, and a favourite for good reason. The embankment runs out toward hills that glow orange at sundown, and the still reservoir mirrors the whole sky. Ten minutes from the resort, it's the easiest sunset run you'll ever make.

Kuanria Dam & Deer Park, Dasapalla — ~35 km

A 1.5-km-long dam across the Kuanria River, paired with a deer park home to more than a hundred spotted deer. The Minar Park picnic area offers panoramic viewpoints over the hills, river and forest, and boating is available. Open roughly 8 AM–5 PM; loveliest in the winter months.

Budha Budhiani Dam, Odagaon — ~35 km

A peaceful reservoir set in gentle countryside — a good pairing with the Raghunath temple at nearby Odagaon.

Baishnabagiri Park, Nayagarh — ~32 km

A landscaped park-and-hill spot popular with families for easy walks and picnics.

Kotagada — ~40 km

A scenic getaway for those who want to wander a little further off the map.

Make a day of it

Pack a picnic from our kitchen, head out mid-afternoon, and time your return for golden hour at Panipoila. Wake up minutes from the water — book your stay at GSDR Nature's Cave.

Picnic season around Nayagarh

In Odisha, November to February is picnic season, when families and friends head out for long lunches in the open. The dams and parks around Nayagarh are some of the best places for it, with wide views, shade, water and room to spread out. Weekends and holidays get busy at the better-known spots, so arrive early or go on a weekday if you want quiet.

Pairing the dams with other trips

  • Panipoila Dam (3.5 km) with Rajagiri Waterfall (5 km): an easy half-day close to the resort. See our waterfall guide.

  • Budha Budhiani Dam with the Raghunath temple, both around Odagaon. See the temple trail.

  • Kuanria Dam & Deer Park with Ratnaganda Waterfall, both near Dasapalla, for a full day.

Picnic checklist

  • Plenty of drinking water, as shops are few

  • Mats or a blanket, and some shade for midday

  • Bags to carry all your rubbish home

  • Keep children well back from the water's edge

  • At Kuanria, check on the day whether boating is running

Or picnic at the farm

If you'd rather stay put, GSDR Nature's Cave has its own open picnic areas, gardens and a grill and barbecue kitchen. Ask about the Pindi Experience, our open-air, cook-your-own picnic space, for a traditional Odia-style day out without leaving the farm.

Where to stay

Wake up minutes from the water. Choose our Nature Cottages, set among the gardens close to the pool and dining hall, or one of the more private Private Garden Cottages in a quieter corner of the farm. Stays start from ₹3,999 a night for two adults with breakfast, and we're about a 90-minute drive from Bhubaneswar. Check availability and book direct.
