5 Beautiful Waterfalls Near Nayagarh to Visit from GSDR Nature's Cave

When the monsoon rolls across Nayagarh, the hills start to sing. Streams that were dry a month earlier tumble over granite shelves and disappear into green valleys — and several of Odisha's loveliest waterfalls are within easy reach of GSDR Nature's Cave. Here are five worth chasing.

1. Rajagiri Waterfall — 5 km

Our nearest and most-loved cascade. Rajagiri spills over broad sheets of rock framed by forested hills, and its closeness makes it a perfect early-morning or sunset walk from the resort. It's at its most dramatic from July through October; carry sturdy footwear, as the rocks stay slick.

2. Similijhar Waterfall — ~32 km

A quieter, forest-wrapped fall that rewards those who like their nature undisturbed. Best after good rain, when the flow is full and the surrounding greenery is at its richest.

3. Godipalli Waterfall — ~33 km

A scenic countryside cascade set among fields and low hills — an easy add-on to a temple day out in the same direction.

4. Barakanya Waterfall — ~42 km

A picturesque spot that makes a rewarding half-day trip, especially in the post-monsoon months when the water runs clear and strong.

5. Ratnaganda Waterfall, Dasapalla — ~60 km

The furthest on this list and the biggest adventure — combine it with Kuanria Dam and the deer park near Dasapalla for a full day out.

Tips for visiting waterfalls near Nayagarh

Visit between July and November for the fullest flow, start early to beat the midday sun, wear grippy shoes, and never wade near the lip of a fall during heavy flow. Pack a picnic — most of these spots have little by way of shops.

Base yourself close to the water: Rajagiri is just five minutes from GSDR Nature's Cave.

Planning a waterfall day

The five falls fit naturally into three outings. Rajagiri is close enough for a quick morning or evening visit from the resort. Similijhar (~32 km) and Godipalli (~33 km) are at a similar distance and work as a half-day pair, or as an add-on to a temple day. Barakanya (~42 km) is a half-day on its own. Ratnaganda (~60 km) is best combined with Kuanria Dam and the deer park near Dasapalla for a full day out.

When the waterfalls are at their best

Flow depends on rain. From July to October the falls run full and the forest around them is at its greenest. By November the water clears and the paths dry out, which many visitors find the most comfortable time. In the dry months from March to June several of these falls slow to a trickle, so ask us before you set out.

Staying safe at the falls

  • Rock near moving water is slippery in every season. Wear shoes with good grip and keep to dry rock.

  • Stay well back from the edge of a fall, and don't swim in plunge pools during heavy flow; the current is stronger than it looks.

  • Water can rise quickly after rain upstream. If it turns muddy or starts rising, move away from the stream.

  • Carry drinking water and snacks. Most of these spots have few or no shops.

  • Take your litter back with you.

After the waterfalls

Come back to the farm for a swim, a hot meal from our kitchen and an evening by the grill. Waterfall season is also monsoon season at GSDR Nature's Cave, when the orchards and sal forest are at their greenest.
